Hallucinogens Addiction and Abuse

Hallucinogens are drugs that cause hallucinations, or profound distortions in the way a person looks at reality. They're known by a wide range of street names, such as acid, angel dust, and vitamin K.
Under the influence of hallucinogens, people see images, hear sounds, and feel sensations that seem real but do not exist. Some hallucinogens also produce rapid, intense emotional swings and lead to bizarre - and dangerous - behavior. Drugs like PCP and ketamine may make a user feel disconnected and out of control and can produce respiratory depression, abnormal heart rates, and a withdrawal syndrome. Another hallucinogen, LSD (an abbreviation of the German words for "lysergic acid diethylamide"), is associated with psychotic-like episodes that can occur long after a person has taken the drug,.

LSD, the drug most commonly identified with the term "hallucinogen" and the most widely used in this class of drugs, is considered the typical hallucinogen in the way it affects the body's serotonin system. Distributed throughout the brain and spinal cord, the serotonin system is involved in the control of behavioral, perceptual, and regulatory systems, including mood, hunger, body temperature, sexual behavior, muscle control, and sensory perception. Other hallucinogens include mescaline, psilocybin, and ibogaine.

Ketamine and LSD, in particular, are becoming more widely used at dance clubs and all-night raves by older teens and young adults. Trained, sensitive professionals at Sunrise Recovery Center are well equipped to treat those who have developed addictions to hallucinogenic drugs, which cause their effects by disrupting the interaction of nerve cells and the neurotransmitter serotonin.
