T.E.A.C.H.

Impaired by chemical abuse and ineffective living skills, young people are often unable to reach their goals. They may experience difficulty in several areas: consistent job loss, expulsion from college, failed relationships, and financial and legal complications.

For years, mental health professionals in the field of chemical dependency have been aware of how drug and alcohol abuse can impede the educational process. We wanted to do something about this statistic. That's why, in 1997, SLBTS Treatment Centers established T.E.A.C.H., a truly innovative education program that focuses on the student. SLBTS clients who are students can earn their G.E.D., earn a high school diploma from their own school, and attend an accredited college in the area to work toward a graduation goal.

Over the years, T.E.A.C.H. has earned critical acclaim. As Dick Wilson, Professor and Dept. Chair at Saddleback College, in Mission Viejo California, writes:

"What we have in T.E.A.C.H. is truly unique to the world of treatment and education. I know of nothing like it anywhere. Your students continue to excel and are models for other students."

T.E.A.C.H. at SLBTS is considered the prototype for the next generation of ancillary treatment in the field of chemical dependency.

Since participation in an appropriate 12-step program can be vital to recovery, as part of our T.E.A.C.H. Program, all student residents are required to attend daily 12-step meetings both on and off the premises. Ongoing treatment includes relapse prevention, education to assist them in developing sober leisure skills and sober college friendships. This is of crucial importance, since they will be returning to their colleges where they will be in contact with friends from their "old" lives.

Adding further strength to our T.E.A.C.H. Program, we formed a partnership with Saddleback Community College in which we created a fully supervised and accredited education program. Participating residents live in our transitional treatment housing for education. The program includes transportation, monitored study periods, computer equipment and tutorial services, if needed. College credits are transferable to most accredited colleges and universities in the United States.
