Dual Diagnosis Track

Dual diagnosis is a term used to describe clients who have an ongoing disease process, characterized by more than one diagnosis. Since chemical dependency and other disorders have a habit of walking hand in hand, it is not uncommon for a client to enter one of our programs seeking treatment for an addiction and in the process finds that another disorder is present. In fact, up to 70 percent of chemically dependent individuals may suffer from undiagnosed and untreated secondary diagnoses.

Our Dual Diagnosis Program is well suited for clients who require help with more than one problem. In addition to treatment for chemical dependency, we offer individual and group therapy for trauma resolution, gambling problems, eating disorders, and more. We also provide medication management and individual counseling for a wide range of mental illnesses, and other personality and behavioral disorders.

Counseling is an important part of care. Our clients receive individual and/or group therapy for any additional diagnosis that may accompany chemical dependency. Our medical director, a board-certified psychiatrist, performs all initial client evaluations. Our clinical director, who also specializes in marriage and family counseling, coordinates our clinical program. In addition, we have on staff a specialist who helps clients in the areas of trauma resolution and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Our chemical dependency counselors are certified in many areas of counseling. These include the treatment of gambling, eating disorders, life skills and relapse prevention. These highly skilled and qualified people act as our case managers, and they provide an important one-on-one link with each of our clients and their families.

Our entire clinical staff meets weekly to review the progress of every client in our facility. We have found that a client's progress is best determined when a multidisciplinary team approach is used. If it is determined that a client needs assistance with any other diagnosis or disorder, he or she is referred to the appropriate individual and group counselors for appropriate sessions.

Sometimes medication is a necessary part of treatment, especially in cases of dual diagnosis. Our medical director is a prescribing psychiatrist. He performs initial evaluations and monitors each client who requires medication.

At SLBTS, we treat a wide variety of clients and dependencies. However, once in awhile a client comes to us with a diagnosis beyond the scope of our care. In such instances, we can refer the client to an expert in their required specialty outside our treatment centers. We help these special-needs clients find qualified specialists and even provide the transportation and supervision that may be required to get the client to and from an outside therapist's office.
